Stress is a normal part of everyday life. We need some stress to push us to achieve our goals but when our stress levels are too high our bodies respond with the primitive flight-fight syndrome; in primitive times this was useful when we came face to face with a wild animal, we could stay and fight the threat or we could run away from it. In modern day life we still produce the same stress hormones for the flight-fight syndrome but we rarely need to fight a wild animal or deal with anything life threatening so these hormones build up in the body and cause the symptoms of stress. We need to manage our stress levels to avoid the symptoms of stress.
Stress can be experienced as anxiety, depression or anger. Sometimes stress will cause physical symptoms such as panic attacks, muscle tension and insomnia. Some people will even suffer from a stress-related illness such as high blood pressure or digestive problems such as IBS, acid-reflux or ulcers. Other people may develop phobias and compulsive behaviours.
